Technology: A Blessing And A Burden
Technology is both a blessing and a burden to adults and older adults.
The Internet Age brings with it new opportunities to stay in touch with family and friends. From receiving pictures of the grandchildren to exchanging recipes, e-mail has transformed the way we all communicate. Online dating is here to stay, with services like JDate, PlentyofFish, and eHarmony. Social websites like Facebook helps us keep in touch, and helps us find those we may have lost touch with. Photo sharing websites enable us to immediately share adventures and events.
These are compelling reasons why adults and older adults want to become computer-aware and Internet-enabled. A computer and the Internet bring our families, friends, and the world into a home without ever leaving it.
For adults who were educated before the Internet Age, learning this technology can seem daunting. Technology is second nature to our children and grandchildren, but not to us. Consequently, adults may feel intimidated to overwhelmed by computers.
Fortunately, over the last 21 years, I have developed a patient style of teaching that creates a safe, calm learning environment. I’m told by my clients that my approach results in their having more comfort with and a broader understanding of using technology.
If you could benefit from this type of help and instruction, or if you felt you would not be able to learn computers and the Internet, I would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about how I might be able to help you.
